San Antonio, Texas, Fire Department, Mobile Integrated Health Division: “Harm Reduction,” the New “Fire Prevention”

In 2018, the San Antonio (Texas) Fire Department Mobile Integrated Health program developed the Texas Targeted Opioid Response program, designed to help stabilize patients with a history of opioid use in a pre-hospital setting and refer them to a facility to assist with the long-term rehabilitation and recovery. The program aims to be the bridge between overdose and the counseling/recovery center, distribution of Narcan, and education of patients and families. In 2019, the fire department started a medication-assisted treatment program with the intent of providing in-field induction of Suboxone to assist patients awaiting treatment.
