Champion of Recovery: Jamie Decker

Jamie Decker is a Harm Reduction Coordinator and Peer Support Specialist with Hancock Public Health in Hancock County, Ohio. COSSUP is supporting the county’s Recovery Community Organization Outreach Project, which is designed to enhance recovery support services and peer recovery support services and increase access to transitional or recovery housing for individuals 18 years and older who have a history of opioid, stimulant, or other substance use disorders. In his work as a peer support specialist, Jamie leverages his nine years in recovery to help inform the decision-making of his clients and connect them to treatment and other services: “It’s very helpful for me to be able to tell them, ‘Here, I’ve done this, this is what happened, it was a bad experience for me or it was a good experience for me,’ Jamie says. “But I always try to remind them that whatever worked or did not work for me, may work or not work for them. I can give them an array of options. You give people that are very marginalized, that feel like nobody cares about them – there’s one place in town that does, and they can hopefully know that and I can connect them to other people that actually do care about them.”
