Many individuals in custody live with substance use disorders, which can complicate reentry upon release from incarceration. Social workers, clinicians, and case managers are trained to help individuals make the transition to recovery and to the community but may not initially consider a career in corrections. Recruiting for these positions has become especially challenging in today’s economy, which is marked by “help wanted” signs seemingly everywhere.

Colonel Brenda Dietzman has more than 28 years of law enforcement and corrections experience. In 2019, she retired from the Sedgwick County, Kansas, Sheriff’s Office as the undersheriff in charge of jail operation, where she oversaw two facilities with a total population of more than 1,400 inmates, more than 300 employees, and a $33 million budget. As cofounder of Wayfinder Consulting, LLC, she provides evidence-based training solutions on many topics related to criminal justice, including recruitment and retention.
