Police Responses to Behavioral Health Challenges Through Deflection Strategies

According to research, behavioral health is a major societal issue with public health and criminal justice implications. In 2017, an estimated 19.7 million Americans aged 12 and older had substance use disorders (SUDs), 46.6 million had a mental health disorder, and 8.5 million had co-occurring SUDs and mental health disorders. Deflection initiatives are increasing within law enforcement agencies to improve service connections for individuals in their communities and employ more collaborative interventions to create community-based treatment pathways for people with SUDs, mental health disorders, or both without entering the justice system.

In this webinar, law enforcement and public safety practitioners will share deflection initiatives in their local communities based on specific community problems and challenges that need to be addressed and the resources available to address them.
